Power-Up Trophy

Mountain Ridge Junior High is committed to promoting good health for its students, faculty, and staff through proper nutrition and physical exercise. To further this goal, five years ago we banned vending machines from our school and began teaching the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. We followed up last year with a policy that restricted the use of food as a reward for student performance, and again this year with policies ensuring that only healthy food and beverage choices are available whenever food is provided outside of school meal services and banning the advertisement of less nutritious foods. Then, with the help of our student Power-Up committee, we created the first ever Mountain Ridge Junior High Husky Den Student Store. Using the awards we had received from the GMS program for reaching the Bronze and Silver levels, we stocked our store with fun pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters, markers, folders, pen and notebook sets, chap stick, locker mirrors, and whiteboards. Positive behavior was encouraged and rewarded with student store money which students could then use to purchase items.

We believe that providing food based on performance or behavior connects food to mood. Our student Students at Storestore is intended to be a place where our students can use the reward “money” that they have earned through their positive behavior and/or excellent academic performance to purchase fun things that are non-food related. With the assistance of our MRJH Administration and GMS Coordinator, the student store employs its student Power-Up Committee to stock, inventory, and work in
the student store which is open for our students during lunches.
