National Nutrition Month® – "Nutrition from the Ground Up"
National Nutrition Month® is sponsored by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The theme for this year is “Nutrition from the Group Up.” In 1973 the ADA organized the first National Nutrition Week. However due to increased popularity surrounding nutrition, in 1980 the event was extended and became National Nutrition Month®. Information about ways to promote National Nutrition Month®, including healthy snack ideas for children, healthy shopping tips, and ideas for eating more fruits and vegetables, are available on the ADA Web site: eatright.org/NNM.
When eating from the “ground up,” start with the basics. Focus on including a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean meat products. Choose foods high in vitamins and minerals and watch portion sizes. Balancing a healthy diet with physical activity will promote a healthy lifestyle and maintain a healthy weight.
