Healthy Halloween Treats, Non-Food Incentives  
Is your school working to eliminate food rewards from the classroom?  If so you are probably searching for ideas on how to reward kids during this spooky season.  See if some of these ideas may work for your class room  
  • Hand out a Halloween Homework pass instead of a treat
  • Do a Halloween relay in your gym classes including things such as a “witches hat ring toss” or “flying ghost baskets”
  • In Family and Consumer Science classes make healthy foods made with pumpkin
  • Work with art teachers to make a “Tobacco is Scary” poster

And have a Happy Halloween!

 
   
California After School Resource Center  

Does your school have an after school program? Are you a parent looking for new idea’s on how to keep your kids busy after school?  If so the California After School Resources Center (CASRC) is a great place to go for new ideas! You can search for materials on Nutrition, Physical Activity, Academics and so much more.  You can find ideas for children and adolescents, grades K-12.  Ideas on this web site are also great for the classroom!

Red Ribbon Week and Purple Ribbon Month  
Is your school celebrating Red Ribbon week and Purple Ribbon month?  If not you may want to consider joining other schools in your area to celebrate!  Red Ribbon Week is October 23-31 and focuses on drug prevention. Purple Ribbon month has a focus on domestic violence.  
   
The Leonardo on Wheels  
The Leonardo on Wheels is a traveling science center designed to help students learn, and help teachers teach.  The goal for The Leonardo on Wheels—Science is to provide opportunities for students, teachers, and parents to be inspired and empowered to see beyond the ordinary and to discover more fully the world that surrounds them.  To find out when they will be in your area visit www.utahsciencecenter.org/lows.  
   
Real Noise  
How would you like to expose the TRUTH about tobacco and win $1,000?  Create a mural, rap, plan an event, or do whatever it takes to get your message heard!  Then submit your entry to Crowell advertising by November 21, 2008 so you can win $1,000 and a concert for your school.  Entries will be judged on the strength of their anti-tobacco message, creativity, and the impact on their school and community.  For more information visit fighttheugly.com/real-noise.  
   
Power-Up Committee  
Has your school established a Power-Up committee yet?  If not you will want to do that soon!  Your Power-Up committee will need a mayor, historian, publicity officer, secretary, and committee members.  Each of these people has important roles in making the program successful at your school. Get Fit Get Right  

Do you need to kick start your physical activity now that school has started? Have you wondered how you can eat nutritious food during the school day?
