At McKinley School the students, teachers, secretaries, janitor, principal, and even the cooks are all “Going for the Gold”! They have walked over 5,000 miles so far this year. The students are touring the United States by visiting each State Capitol. For every five capitols they visit, their principal rewards them with a physical fitness activity. Their principal attended the Gold Medal Schools PE training in January receiving many wonderful fitness game ideas that she has shared with her students. The students have loved it!

Through out the year the school participates in various fun, physically fit activities. They started off in September with a night of Square Dancing and Chili Cook off for the whole family. In November they sponsored a Turkey Trot in which the whole school ran the Gold Medal Mile. The winning boy and girl of each grade received a turkey donated by local grocery stores. The PTA also sponsors a “Spirit Day” each month where a member of the PTA visits each classroom and does a physical activity with the students.

The lunch staff at McKinley School have been very energetic and supportive in teaching nutrition to the students. They have a monthly trivia board that tells students nutritious facts and information. During National Lunch week they dressed up as Veggie Heroes while serving lunch. They also held a contest where the students created their own veggie heroes out of vegetables and had a poster contest for the younger grades. The cooks are always looking for new ideas and ways to present the food they are serving to look more appealing to the students.

McKinley will end the school year by holding their annual school pentathlon. Students will be competing in the long jump, the 40-yard dash, the high jump, the shot put, and the 100-meter run. Winners will go on and compete at the district level.

It takes a whole school to train and go for the gold, and McKinley School is giving it their all!
